The production facilities for the Smart are currently being built near the town of Hambach in Lorraine. The small automobile with the impressive performance will be produced by Micro Compact Car AG (MCC) and the local system partners in Hambach in an investment amounting to DM 700 million.
The highly automated production facilities supplied by the systems companies Magna Automobiltechnik (body shop), Eisenmann (paint shop) and VDO (cockpit trim) are equipped with INTERBUS. Production is due to commence at the start of 1998 and 200 000 units should be produced by the year 2001.
