Quickon clamps down on costs

Paal's packing presses factory, "Packpressen-Fabrik GmbH + Co. KG", from Georgsmarienhütte near the Teutoburg forest has been manufacturing paper presses of different types and performance classes since 1935. The company is one of the oldest and most experienced manufacturers of automatic channel baling presses in Europe, and is constantly looking for possibilities for improvement and cost reduction. The expenses for parts, assembly and logistics are continuously checked for potential cost reductions. System downtimes must be reduced by using reliable components, and the benefit for the customer must be increased by coming up with new ideas.

Since the QUICKON quick connection system has been being used for wiring sensors and actuators, the times needed for connecting conductors, and therefore assembly costs, have been cut considerably. In addition, storage costs have successfully been decreased thanks to QUICKON. Previously, the majority of sensors and valves were connected by means of plug connectors with preassembled conductors. These connecting plugs with different conductor lengths resulted in a large amount of stock which meant high management costs. If new types were required, long delivery periods had to be taken into account. Apart from preassembled cables, plug connectors for free assembly were also used. On the one hand this meant more flexibility, but on the other hand, conductor connection was extremely time-consuming.

Today, plug connectors with QUICKON quick connection system are used for all channel baling presses. The valves, for example, of the hydraulic block which has been newly designed by Paal are connected by means of the QUICKON valve plug. But also when connecting the sensors, the quick connection technique is used successfully. In this case, the four-position Quickon M12 connector is used. Due to these connection plugs, the stock has been drastically reduced. The conductor is supplied off the roll and the length of the cable is matched to the system directly on site. Wherever possible, Paal uses sensors and actuators with the QUICKON connection directly integrated. This means that the PG cable glands or plug connectors which have been used up to now are no longer required, resulting in further cost reductions.

Some of the paper presses work around the clock in the rugged environment of the raw material industry or in the field of refuse disposal. Here, reliability is a major requirement. Unplanned downtimes are not acceptable. Therefore, the components used must fulfill high requirements as regards their reliability. The insulation displacement contacts used meet the vibration and shock requirements and guarantee reliable contacting between the conductor and the device, even under the rough conditions present during press operation.
