Directly Interface Process Information From Serial Devices Into Omron Micro PLC’s

Application Description

Interfacing serial devices to PLC’s is a function often found in more expensive modular controllers. Simple packaging and material handling machinery sometimes requires a bar code reader, printer, message display, RFID input, or other type of serial device to be integrated into the control system. This ability to input and output serial data to the controller easily and without additional cost is a desired function for small OEM machine builders.

Omron Solution
Omron CPM2A and CPM2C Controllers have a no protocol function built in directly to the serial port. Data from bar code readers, RFID, weigh scales can be easily incorporated to a low end cost effective control system using Omron PLC’s. The ability to output serial data to printers and message displays is also available.

Application Solution Diagram
Serial devices can be connected directly to the RS232 port of the PLC. Data can be both received and transmitted using the built in no-protocol communications function.

  • Direct built in connection to the PLC serial port without adapters or special cables.

  • Data is stored in Data Memory for easy access to the logic.

  • Omron has the ability to store and view ASCII characters in Data Memory.

  • Serial Data to be output to displays or printers can be pre-stored in Data Memory using Omron’s CX-Programmer software.

  • Simple ladder logic programming allows input and output control of the serial port.

Omron Advantages
  • Direct connection to the serial port with no special hardware adapters or cables required.

  • Simple Ladder commands set up the port to transmit or receive data automatically.

  • Output Messages can be pre-stored in non-volatile memory and selected by the logic program on demand.

Industries and Applications

A large variety of serial devices exist in many different applications including packaging, material handling, assembly, and process control. Devices range from printers and message displays to bar code, RFID, weigh scales, and specialty sensors.
